Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has quickly become one of the standout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After a heroic performance against Spain on Monday, his social media following exploded almost overnight, climbing from a modest 50,000 followers to nearly 5 million within hours of the final whistle.
Vozinha, whose full name is Josimar José Évora Dias, has made 91 appearances for the Cape Verde national team since 2012.
However, it was his performance against Spain that truly put him in the global spotlight. Cape Verde were pinned back for much of the match, but the 40-year-old goalkeeper made seven crucial saves to keep a clean sheet and earn his side a historic point.
Spain pinned Cape Verde back in their own half for most of the contest, yet every time the European champions broke through, Vozinha came up with an answer. His heroics earned him the player of the match award, as he produced a string of saves at the end of the first half to deny Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Aymeric Laporte. Spain also threw plenty at him in numerical terms, since they sent 27 shots his way over the course of the match.

Given the gulf in stature between the two sides, the result came as a shock to most observers. Few people gave Cape Verde much of a chance entering their World Cup opener against Spain. It was not only the nation’s first-ever appearance on football’s biggest stage, but they were also facing a Spain squad that many considered among the tournament favorites
Despite those odds, Cape Verde held firm, and the goalless draw turned into a defining moment of the tournament so far. As highlights from the match spread across the globe, fans began searching for the goalkeeper who had frustrated one of the competition’s favorites, and his Instagram following skyrocketed throughout and after the game.
The performance clearly meant a great deal to Vozinha on a personal level. Cape Verde’s goalkeeper broke down in tears at the end of the draw, after being mobbed by his teammates following his stunning display. Speaking afterward, he reflected on what the moment meant to him and his family.
Vozinha said it was an honor for him to represent his country, calling it a proud moment. He explained that he cried partly because he grew up with his grandparents, who had passed away a few years earlier, without getting to see this day, after doing everything for him throughout his life. He also mentioned that his mother could not attend either, since the family was unable to arrange her visa in time, and he wished she could have been there too.
Vozinha’s unusual nickname has an interesting backstory of its own. Born in Mindelo, a Cape Verdean town of around 70,000 people, Vozinha was originally meant to be a striker.
His father wanted to name him after Argentine forward Jorge Valdano, but local authorities did not allow it. Instead, he became known as Vozinha, meaning “Little Granny,” and he went on to become a goalkeeper rather than a striker. He eventually turned professional at age 25, making his debut for a little-known local side in 2007, the same year that Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal was born.
The wave of attention shows no signs of slowing down, and neither does Vozinha’s journey at this World Cup. Cape Verde will next face Uruguay on Sunday, June 21, in Miami Gardens, Florida. For now, though, Vozinha remains grateful for the outpouring of support. As he put it himself, this has become one of the best moments of his life and one of the best experiences he has had in the sport he loves.
