GOAL 1 – Anthony Gordon, 55′: England Break the Deadlock
England came out stronger after the break and quickly found the opening goal. Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute, assisted by Morgan Rogers, to give England a well-deserved lead. Gordon drove into the Argentine penalty area and finished calmly to send the England fans inside Atlanta Stadium into raptures.
The goal reflected England’s bright start to the second half. They pressed Argentina high up the pitch and forced errors that created dangerous situations. For much of the next 20 minutes, it looked as though England were heading to the World Cup Final for the first time since 1966.
Argentina’s Defensive Heroics and Near Misses
Argentina fought back and created several big chances to level the match before they eventually did. Alexis Mac Allister’s header off a De Paul cross cannoned against the left post, with Pickford left stranded. Mac Allister also tested Pickford again with a shot on goal in the 76th minute, and Nico Gonzalez had a header that flashed just wide. England survived each moment and grew in confidence as the clock ticked down.
Djed Spence delivered one of the defensive moments of the match. The England defender timed his tackle to perfection to deny an Argentine forward just when they looked certain to score, drawing wild celebrations from his teammates and the crowd alike.
Jordan Pickford also made a stunning save to deny a Messi delivery into the box from finding a head at the far post, keeping England’s lead intact as the match entered its final stages. At that point, England looked set to reach their first World Cup Final since 1966.
GOAL 2 (Argentina) – Enzo Fernandez, 85′: History Is Leveled
Messi delivered two assists in the final 15 minutes that turned the match completely on its head. The first came in the 85th minute.
Enzo Fernandez struck a rasping, sweetly hit shot from 20 yards out past a raft of bodies that left Jordan Pickford with no chance. Off a pass from Lionel Messi, Fernández took a left-bending shot from outside the top of the box that Pickford could not reach. The goal was a moment of pure quality from the Argentine midfielder, and it tied the match at 1-1 with five minutes of normal time remaining.
Argentina had scored nine goals at this World Cup after the 75th minute entering the match. This made it ten.
GOAL 3 (Argentina) – Lautaro Martinez, 90’+: The Winning Header
Argentina were not done. With England still reeling from the equalizer, Messi struck again almost immediately in stoppage time.
After Alexis Mac Allister hit the post, Lionel Messi collected the rebound and fired a cross into the box, which Lautaro Martínez headed into the left side of the net to give Argentina the lead. It was another extraordinary late intervention from Messi, delivering the decisive moment when his team needed it most.
England pushed desperately for an equalizer in the closing minutes. England brought on tall defenders Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly as Tuchel threw everything forward. However, Argentina held firm and secured a 2-1 victory that sent them to the World Cup Final.

The night belonged entirely to Messi. He did not score, but his two assists in the final minutes of the match once again confirmed his status as the most decisive player in World Cup history. For Argentina, it has not been pretty, but it has been inevitable as the World Cup title defense continued.
