USA vs Australia Match Highlights | FIFA World Cup 2026

USA 2-0 Australia | Group D, Match 32 | June 19, 2026 | Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington

The United States secured its place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Australia in front of a loud home crowd in Seattle.

Both goals arrived before halftime, and the USMNT’s defense did the rest. It was a result that pushed the US to the top of Group D and underlined their status as one of the tournament’s most exciting teams.

Pulisic Misses Out, Pepi Steps Up

The biggest talking point before kickoff was the absence of captain Christian Pulisic. The USMNT captain suffered a lingering left calf injury after taking a heavy kick during the opening 4-1 win over Paraguay and was substituted at halftime of that match.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the decision to leave him out was made as a precaution after Pulisic spent the week on a modified training schedule.

Pochettino told Fox Sports that Pulisic was “of course a little bit sad because he wanted to stay, he wanted to participate today, but he is still so swollen.” He added that the coaching staff hoped Pulisic would be ready to return for the final group stage match.

In Pulisic’s place, Ricardo Pepi started, with Pochettino switching to a 5-3-2 formation. Pepi partnered Folarin Balogun up front, while Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest took up wingback roles, and the midfield trio of Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman, and Tyler Adams remained unchanged.

GOAL 1 – Cameron Burgess OG, 11′: USA Take the Lead

The first goal arrived in the 11th minute. Folarin Balogun made a run down the left side and tapped the ball into the box, where Australian defender Cameron Burgess tried to clear it out of harm’s way but instead knocked it firmly into his own net.

It was the second own goal from a US opponent in two games, after Paraguay had also put the ball in their own net in the opener a week earlier. Still, the pressure that led to the moment was entirely of the USA’s making, and Balogun’s forward run deserved full credit for forcing the error.

A Nervy Spell Before the Second Goal

After taking the lead, the US had a few uncomfortable moments. The team turned the ball over twice in their own end, and on one occasion, Australia had a shot on net. However, US goalkeeper Matt Freese made the save look comfortable. Australia also found some pockets of space on the counterattack but could not turn pressure into a clear-cut chance.

The US continued to carry a threat going forward, and its persistence soon paid off again.

GOAL 2 – Alex Freeman, 43′: USA Double the Lead

The second goal came from Alex Freeman off a deflected Sergiño Dest shot in the 43rd minute. An assistant referee immediately flagged the play for offside after Freeman headed the ball into the net. However, VAR overturned the decision as the Seattle crowd erupted.

It was Freeman’s first-ever World Cup goal and his third for the USMNT overall. Freeman had been excellent throughout the first half, winning several ground duels and making key tackles. On a set piece, Dest blasted a shot at the center of the box that took a wicked deflection, and Freeman was first to pounce on the ball to capitalize on the opportunity.

The US headed into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead, and the result already appeared to be firmly in their hands.

Second Half: Defense Holds Firm

Australia came out with more urgency after the break, and the second half became a test of the US defense rather than their attack. As the match wore on, the Australians started controlling the ball in the final third, with tired legs beginning to show for the Americans.

Pochettino responded by making changes. He brought on Sebastian Berhalter for Pepi in the 71st minute, followed by defensive changes as Dest and Robinson came off for Joe Scally and Austin Trusty around the 80th minute. The fresh legs helped stabilize the back line as Australia pushed harder for a way back into the game.

Freese Denies Australia Late On

Just when Australia looked most threatening, US goalkeeper Matt Freese delivered the moment that sealed the result. South Korea’s Cho Gue-sung had a pair of quick-fire chances in the 87th minute, but Freese produced a stunning double save to deny him and preserve the clean sheet.

It also got heated late in the match, with Balogun and Australian defender Souttar squaring off before both receiving yellow cards in the 88th minute. Despite Australia’s late pressure, the scoreline never changed, and the US held on comfortably.

USA Secure Their Knockout Stage Place

The 2-0 victory, combined with their opening 4-1 win over Paraguay, confirmed the United States’ place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This was a crucial victory that leaves the US with strong prospects in Group D, while Australia will have to rethink their strategy for their next match if they want to stay in the tournament.

Context: Both Teams Came In With Wins

Australia came into the match with confidence after their solid start to the 2026 World Cup. The Socceroos had defeated Turkey 2-0 in their debut, leaving them level with the United States at the top of Group D going into the game. The winner of Friday’s match would move to six points and take a commanding hold of the group.

The US delivered exactly that, making a powerful statement of intent with back-to-back wins to open their home World Cup.

What’s Next for Both Teams

The US will now face Paraguay in their final group stage fixture, with the opportunity to finish the group stage with a perfect record. Australia, meanwhile, must beat Turkey in their remaining game and hope for a favorable result elsewhere to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
